New Plymouth Model Aero Club - Model Aero Club

Wings Qualification Programme

Our club encourages all RC pilots to work towards wings qualifications in their chosen discipline. At the very least we would expect our pilots to hold a Basic Power level of proficiency. There are qualified examiners in the club to assist new pilots in achieving their goals.

1. Aim
1.1. To provide certification of a basic proficiency level for Radio Control model pilots enabling them to operate unsupervised. Pilots achieving the required level are entitled to hold the MFNZ ‘Wings’ qualification, endorsed to one or more of 10 disciplines, plus 3 specialist qualifications.

1.2. To meet the requirements of Civil Aviation Rule 101.205 for flying within 4km of aerodromes.

1.3. To provide a way of demonstrating a higher level of skill by completing an advanced test, with ‘advanced’ certification.

As of 2025 all new pilots seeking their wings qualification will first have to complete the online Airspace & Rules exam (link below). Pilots can attempt this as many times as it takes to pass (you must get no more than 4 questions incorrect). Once you have completed your online test, you have 12 months to complete your oral and practical test with a club examiner. Pilots with an existing wings badge, will need to undergo a refresher every 5 years. This involves completing the online refresher exam (link below) and a practical test with a club examiner. You must complete this within the calendar year that your membership number is due. In 2025 this includes all membership numbers from 1 - 5000.

NPMAC examiners are: Mike Pillette, Steve Blackman, Justin Whalley, Dave Bull, Allen Lawrence and Andy Law.

The links below provide the necessary documentation for each discipline. There are 10 disciplines in all but we provide here the most common ones that NPMAC members strive for and hold. Links to the other disciplines are found on the Model Flying NZ site here.
